Course Description
This course provides an introduction into what standards-based grading is and how to implement it in the classroom. Even within a district or school building that does not incorporate standards-based grading, educators can still apply standards-based grading practices within their classrooms, and this course gives strategies on how to do so. By implementing standards-based grading, grades have more meaning to both educators and students. On top of which, educators and students better understand where students are at in their learning. Course Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Students will learn the principles and strategies behind standards-based grading.
- Students will be able to create a student progress monitoring system for their own students to use to track their own learning.
- Students will be able to use and implement standards-based grading in their classes to accurately show what their own students know and understand.
- Students will develop skills to reflect on & improve their own teaching practices.
Relevancy to Practice: This course provides educators with the following relevant information to help improve their practice:
- Strategies to successfully implement standards-based learning and a standards-based grading system in the classroom.
- What standards-based grading looks like in the classroom as well as what, how and when to grade.
- Overcoming challenges with standards-based grading.
- Creating learning targets in student-friendly language from the content standards that students interact with daily.
- Developing progress-monitoring tools to track student learning, knowledge and understanding of each learning target.
- Developing activities and assessments with purpose to assess each learning target and linking each activity and assessment to a learning target.
- Using formative assessments to provide regular and valuable feedback to students.
- Strategies for supporting students during failure and how to grow from it.
- Designing a system for redo’s and retakes so students can have multiple changes to show mastery of the learning targets.

Exchange Policy
Students are able to exchange one course for another within 30 days of registration as long as the course price is the same and the student does not change the University Partner. Transfer Policy
Students that would like to transfer their course from one university partner to another have the opportunity to do so within the first 30 days of registering for a course. To transfer your course, please fill out the “Contact Us” form including your full name, the course you are currently registered for and the new University Partner you’d like to switch to.
