📄 Rhode Island PLU Certificate Renewal Requirements
Rhode Island uses a Professional Learning Unit (PLU) system to measure continuing education for certificate renewal. PLUs are administered by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) and are required for all Initial, Professional, and Advanced educator certificates.
The number of PLUs required is being phased in between 2020 and 2030. For certificates expiring in 2026 or later, most educators will need 100 PLUs per 5-year renewal cycle (Professional certificate). Initial (3-year) certificate holders need 90 PLUs to progress to a Professional certificate.
PLU Requirements by Certificate Type
| Certificate Type | Renewal Cycle | PLUs Required | Credit Equivalent |
|---|---|---|---|
| Initial Certificate | 3 years | 90 PLUs | 6 graduate semester credits |
| Professional Certificate | 5 years | 100 PLUs | 6–7 graduate semester credits |
| Advanced Certificate | 7 years | 100 PLUs + aspirational benchmark | 6–7 credits + advanced achievement |
How CFT graduate credits convert to PLUs: Under Rhode Island regulations (200-RICR-20-20-1.8), 1 graduate semester credit = 15 PLUs. This means:
- 1 CFT course (3 credits) = 45 PLUs — nearly half the full Professional certificate requirement
- 2 CFT courses (6 credits) = 90 PLUs — meets the full Initial certificate requirement
- 2 CFT courses (6–7 credits) = 90–105 PLUs — meets or exceeds the full Professional certificate requirement
Approved PLU Activities
- Graduate-level college coursework from a regionally accredited institution (1 credit = 15 PLUs)
- RIDE-approved professional development workshops and programs (1 hour = 1 PLU)
- Curriculum development, mentoring, and other district-approved professional learning
- National Board Certification preparation and renewal activities
⚠️ Important: PLU Reporting Process
Rhode Island educators employed in public schools submit PLU evidence to their employing district, which then verifies completion through the RIDE Personnel Data Collection system. You do not submit PLUs directly to RIDE — your district HR department handles the verification. Keep records of all completed PLUs and official transcripts for your own files.

The Rhode Island Teacher Salary Schedule: What You Need to Know
Rhode Island districts use a lane-based salary schedule where your pay is determined by two factors: years of experience and the number of graduate credits you've earned beyond your initial degree. The table below shows real salary data from Barrington School District — one of Rhode Island's highest-paying suburban districts — comparing the lowest lane (Bachelor's degree) against the highest available lane (M+45/CAGS — Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study) at the same experience step. This is the true picture of what graduate credit advancement means for your paycheck.
| Experience Step | B — Lowest Lane | M+45/CAGS — Highest Lane | Annual Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Step 2 (1 yr) | $54,082 | $65,641 | +$11,559/yr |
| Step 3 (2 yrs) | $55,999 | $67,555 | +$11,556/yr |
| Step 4 (3 yrs) | $58,192 | $69,743 | +$11,551/yr |
| Step 5 (4 yrs) | $60,960 | $72,633 | +$11,673/yr |
| Step 7 (6 yrs) | $68,524 | $80,728 | +$12,204/yr |
| Step 9 (8 yrs) | $73,004 | $85,205 | +$12,201/yr |
| Step 10 (9 yrs) | $76,739 | $89,183 | +$12,444/yr |
| Step 12 (top) | $79,480 | $92,173 | +$12,693/yr |
Source: Barrington School District Teacher Salary Schedule. Columns shown: B (Bachelor's, lowest lane) vs. M+45/CAGS (Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study, highest available lane). Individual districts vary — use our Salary Calculator to see your personalized numbers.
What this means in practice: A teacher at the top step (Step 12) of the BA lane earns $79,480 per year. The same teacher at the top step of the M+45/CAGS lane earns $92,173 — a difference of $12,693 per year. What makes Barrington's schedule especially compelling is that the lane differential is remarkably consistent across all experience levels — ranging from $11,551 to $12,693 per year at every step. Over a 25-year career, that differential accumulates to over $310,000 in additional earnings.
The dual benefit most Rhode Island teachers overlook: Every graduate semester credit you earn with Credits for Teachers counts as 15 PLUs toward your certificate renewal and moves you closer to the next salary lane. A single 3-credit course delivers 45 PLUs — nearly half your full Professional certificate renewal requirement — while simultaneously advancing your lane. There is no more efficient investment in your teaching career.
💡 Why the lane gap is so large in Barrington: Barrington's schedule has 7 lanes — B, B+15, B+30, M, M+15, M+30, and M+45/CAGS. The gap between the lowest (B) and highest (M+45/CAGS) lane is over $12,000 per year at every experience step, because the schedule compounds lane premiums across all six intermediate lanes. Even moving from B to B+15 with a single 3-credit course adds over $2,400/yr.
Why Starting Early Changes Everything
Salary advancement works like compound interest. The sooner you earn graduate credits and move across the salary schedule, the more years you earn at the higher rate. The cards below show the Rhode Island-specific lifetime earnings difference between a teacher who stays in the BA lane for their entire career versus one who advances to the M+45/CAGS lane — calculated using real salary data from Barrington School District over a 25-year career.
What this means: A Rhode Island teacher who advances from the BA lane to the M+45/CAGS lane earns over $310,000 more over a 25-year career — an average of more than $12,400 per year in additional earnings. Unlike many states where the lane premium grows only at senior steps, Barrington's schedule delivers a consistent $11,500–$12,700 annual premium at every experience level. The earlier you start accumulating graduate credits, the more years you earn at the higher rate.

Frequently Asked Questions
A Professional Learning Unit (PLU) is Rhode Island's standard measure of continuing professional education. RIDE requires educators to accumulate a set number of PLUs during each certificate cycle to renew their certificate. One PLU is generally equivalent to one hour of approved professional learning. Graduate semester credits convert at a rate of 1 credit = 15 PLUs, making graduate coursework one of the most efficient ways to meet your renewal requirement.
The requirement depends on your certificate type and expiration year. For most educators with a Professional (5-year) certificate expiring in 2026 or later, the requirement is 100 PLUs per renewal cycle. For educators with an Initial (3-year) certificate, the requirement is 90 PLUs to progress to a Professional certificate. Advanced certificate holders need 100 PLUs plus an aspirational benchmark (such as National Board Certification or conferral of an advanced degree). Always verify your specific requirement on RIDE's Renewals and Reinstatements page.
Since 1 graduate semester credit = 15 PLUs, the math is straightforward:
- 1 course (3 credits) = 45 PLUs — covers nearly half of the 100-PLU Professional certificate requirement
- 2 courses (6 credits) = 90 PLUs — meets the full Initial certificate requirement and nearly all of the Professional requirement
- 2 courses (7 credits) = 105 PLUs — exceeds the full Professional certificate requirement
The same courses that satisfy your PLU requirement also advance your salary lane — making them a uniquely efficient investment.
Rhode Island teacher salaries are set by each district's collective bargaining agreement and are typically structured around a lane-and-step schedule. Your lane is determined by your level of education and graduate credits (e.g., BA, BA+30, MA, MA+30, CAGS). Your step reflects your years of experience. Every time you accumulate enough credits to cross a lane threshold, your salary increases permanently at every step on the experience scale. You do not need a full Master's degree to start advancing — individual graduate courses move you across lanes as you accumulate credits.
Most Rhode Island districts accept graduate-level credits from regionally accredited universities for salary lane advancement, but the specific requirements are set by each district's collective bargaining agreement. We recommend verifying with your district HR department before enrolling. Our university partners — University of Massachusetts Global, Valley City State University, CSU Pueblo, and Adams State University — are all regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Contact us if you have questions about acceptance in your specific district.
CAGS stands for Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study — it is Rhode Island's term for the highest salary lane, typically achieved by earning a second Master's degree or accumulating a specified number of graduate credits beyond a first Master's degree (usually 30+ additional credits). The exact requirements vary by district CBA. Credits for Teachers courses can help you accumulate the graduate credits needed to qualify for the CAGS lane, which in districts like Barrington represents an additional $7,661+ per year at the top step compared to the BA lane.
Yes. Credits for Teachers partners with Colorado State University Pueblo to offer a fully online Master of Education (M.Ed.) program. You can apply graduate credits earned through CFT courses directly toward your M.Ed. degree. This allows you to earn a Master's degree on your own schedule without leaving the classroom — and the same credits satisfy your Rhode Island PLU renewal requirement along the way.
Rhode Island educators do not submit PLUs directly to RIDE. Instead, you provide evidence of completed PLUs to your employing district, which verifies and records your completion through the RIDE Personnel Data Collection system. After completing a Credits for Teachers course, your university partner will provide an official transcript. You should submit this transcript — along with any other PLU documentation — to your district HR department. Keep copies of all transcripts and PLU records for your own files. RIDE renews your certificate electronically once your district confirms PLU completion.
What Educators Are Saying
Thousands of teachers have used Credits for Teachers to advance their careers and increase their salaries.
"I didn't realize how much the lane difference added up over time. Moving from BA to the MA lane changed my salary by over $5,000 a year — and the same courses counted toward my PLUs. I wish I had started earlier."
"The courses were genuinely useful and I could do them on my own schedule. My district accepted the credits without any issues, and I knocked out a big chunk of my PLU requirement at the same time."
"I was skeptical at first, but it's completely legitimate. I've now moved two lanes in three years and I'm earning significantly more per year than when I started — while also staying current on my PLUs."
