📄 Ohio Professional Educator License Renewal Requirements
Ohio's Professional Educator License (PEL) must be renewed every 5 years. Renewal requires the equivalent of 6 semester credit hours — which can be completed as graduate credit, continuing education CEUs, or a combination of both. Credits for Teachers offers two pathways to meet this requirement:
Option 1 — Graduate Semester Credit Hours: Complete 6 semester credit hours of graduate-level coursework from one of our regionally accredited university partners. All Credits for Teachers courses are awarded as graduate semester credit hours — two 3-credit courses fulfill the full 5-year renewal. Submit your official transcript through the OH|ID portal.
Option 2 — Continuing Education Units (CEUs): If your district uses the CEU pathway, Credits for Teachers courses still qualify. Because our courses are awarded as semester credit hours, the conversion is: 1 semester credit hour = 3 CEUs = 30 contact hours. A single 3-credit course equals 9 CEUs (90 contact hours), so two courses equal 18 CEUs — covering your full renewal requirement.
🕐 Renewal Requirements at a Glance
- 6 semester credit hours OR 18 CEUs (180 contact hours) per 5-year renewal period — or any combination
- Conversion: 1 semester credit = 3 CEUs = 30 contact hours
- A single 3-credit course = 9 CEUs = 90 contact hours
- Courses must relate to classroom teaching or your area of licensure
- Apply through the OH|ID portal (Ohio's online licensure system); submit official transcripts as documentation

📈 Calculate My Salary Potential →Why Starting Early Changes Everything
Salary advancement works like compound interest. The sooner you earn a higher degree, the more years you earn at the higher rate. The cards below use real salary data from Westerville City School District WEA Salary Schedule to illustrate the 25-year career difference between a Bachelor's and the MA+45 lane.
The rule of thumb: Every year you delay a lane change is a year of higher salary you can never recover. Teachers who start in years 1–5 consistently find it easier to complete courses than those who wait — and they earn more for every remaining year of their career.
