📄 Renew My Maine Teaching Certificate
Educators in Maine are required to renew their certificate every 5 years (National Board Certification Members are every 10 years). To renew a license in Maine, Teachers/Specialists/Administrators must complete six (6) hours or 90 hours of in-service training. To renew your Maine teaching certificate, you must complete 6 semester hours of approved graduate-level study or 90 contact hours of in-service training during your 5-year certification period. Once you have completed your professional development, you submit a renewal application through the Maine Educator Information System (MEIS) — use Chrome or Safari, as Firefox is not compatible. You will need to upload your transcripts as PDF documents. The renewal fee for teachers is $100 for all endorsements renewed at one time.

The number of credits required to advance to the next salary lane varies by district. Maine's state salary matrix includes lanes for BA only, BA+15/BA+30, MA or MA+15, MA+30 or CAS, and Doctorate. Most districts require 15–30 graduate credits to move from one lane to the next. Semester hours are graduate-level credits earned from an accredited college or university — these are what you earn through Credits for Teachers courses. Contact hours are typically associated with in-service training, workshops, or other professional development activities that may not carry graduate credit. For Maine certificate renewal, you can satisfy the requirement with either 6 semester hours or 90 contact hours. Our courses provide graduate-level semester hours, which also count toward salary lane changes.
If your certificate has been expired for less than six months, you can still submit a standard renewal application. If your certificate has been expired for more than six months, you will need to submit a new credential application rather than a renewal. The Maine DOE recommends submitting your renewal documentation before your certificate expires to avoid any lapse in your credentials.

The total program is 38 credits — 18 of which you complete through Credits for Teachers at just $131/credit, and 20 through CSU Pueblo. The total program cost is $11,764, a fraction of a traditional Master's program. You can also earn salary lane changes from the same courses before you finish the degree.
