This course provides students with a variety of strategies to help teach academic vocabulary. Introducing the use of a TIP (Term, Information, Picture) chart in the classroom, this course emphasizes the importance of making vocabulary constantly present in the classroom as well as being associated with not only a definition but also a picture. Many other strategies are also offered to help learners truly understand the academic vocabulary presented to them in the classroom. This is an online course. Course Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
- Students will learn a variety of strategies to teach academic vocabulary in order to improve understanding of the vocabulary.
- Students will create a TIP Chart in their classroom within their content area to help with learning and understanding vocabulary.
- Students will be able to apply new strategies to more effectively teach vocabulary in their content to improve understanding of the vocabulary.
- Students will develop skills to reflect on & improve their own teaching practices.
Relevancy to Practice: This course provides educators with the following relevant information to help improve their practice:
- Implementing a strategic plan to effectively teach academic vocabulary and make vocabulary a constant presence in the classroom.
- Associating vocabulary words with information about the word as well as pictures by utilizing a TIP (Term, Information, Picture) chart in the classroom with students.
- Encouraging students to interact with the TIP chart daily as a resource for their learning.
- Strategies to support vocabulary development and therefore improve comprehension of the content.
- A variety of activities for students to interact with the academic vocabulary to help them truly understand the vocabulary.
- Utilizing a variety of strategies for teaching and reinforcing academic vocabulary that can be implemented at any point within a lesson or unit.
- Overcoming challenges teachers are faced with when teaching vocabulary.
