This course builds upon the foundation of differentiation principles developed in the “Basics of Differentiation” course.  Advanced Differentiation puts a focus on differentiating for students based on interest and difficulty level.  Through developing differentiated learning plans and tiered assignments, educators will be better able to meet the individual needs of their students. This is an online course.  Upon registration, your course materials will be emailed to you.

Course Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Students will be able to develop differentiated learning plans for their lessons to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom.
  • Students will learn the 6 methods for tiering assignments and/or activities for various learners to meet the needs of those learners.
  • Students will be able to develop a tiered assignment to be implemented in a lesson.
  • Students will develop skills to reflect on & improve their own teaching practices.

 

Relevancy to Practice: This course provides educators with the following relevant information to help improve their practice:

  • Differentiating lessons using differentiated learning plans and tiered assignments.
  • Creating effective differentiated learning plans that involve modifying the content, process and product within a lesson while also considering students’ needs, preferences and interests.
  • Incorporating all 9 phases of the differentiated learning plan when designing and carrying out a lesson to meet the needs of all students.
  • Designing and implementing tiered assignments and activities into lessons that will effectively meet the individual needs of all learners.
  • Different ways to tier an assignment such as based on student readiness, challenge of content, or learning preferences.
  • Creating a 3-tiered task to meet the needs of students at, above and below grade-level.
  • Strategies for utilizing flexible grouping in order to support the success of differentiated learning plans and tiered assignments.
